What is the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor?
Psychologists are AHPRA-registered health professionals trained to assess and treat mental health conditions using evidence-based therapies. They can access Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Counsellors and psychotherapists provide talk-based emotional support but are not regulated by AHPRA and generally cannot access Medicare rebates.
What is the difference between a Clinical and a General Psychologist?
A Clinical Psychologist has completed additional postgraduate training in complex mental health conditions. The 2026 Medicare rebate for a Clinical Psychologist is $145.25 versus $98.95 for a General Psychologist. Both require AHPRA registration.
Can a psychologist prescribe medication?
No. Only medical doctors (including psychiatrists) and qualified nurse practitioners can prescribe medication in Australia. Psychologists treat mental health through talk-based, evidence-based therapies.
How do I find a bulk billing psychologist?
Use the "Bulk Billing" filter in our directory search. Bulk billing means the psychologist accepts the Medicare rebate as full payment, so you pay nothing out of pocket. These spots are in high demand, so also filter by availability.
Is the Medicare rebate the same for telehealth psychology sessions?
Yes. In 2026 the Medicare rebate for a video psychology session is identical to an in-person session, as long as you have a current Mental Health Treatment Plan.
What if I run out of Medicare sessions mid-year?
Your Medicare allocation resets on 1 January each year. If you finish your 10 sessions mid-year, you can continue as a private client, use private health extras cover, or ask your GP about other available pathways.
Can I change psychologists after my plan starts?
Yes. Ask your GP to issue a new referral addressed to your new psychologist. Your session count continues from where you left off.
How long does it take to find a psychologist with availability?
Availability varies widely. Using filters for telehealth and accepting new clients narrows results considerably. Many psychologists list their current wait time on their profile.
