About EAP & Workplace Wellbeing support

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are employer-funded confidential counselling services available to employees and often their immediate family members. They are designed to provide short-term support for a broad range of personal and workplace concerns, including stress, relationship difficulties, mental health, grief, financial pressure, and substance use. EAP services are typically free to access and do not require a GP referral. EAPs are a valuable and underused resource. Sessions are kept strictly confidential and are separate from HR processes. They are best understood as an early intervention tool, offering a space to talk through difficulties before they escalate. For concerns that require longer-term or more intensive support, an EAP counsellor can provide referrals to appropriate services in the community. In Australia, EAPs are available through major providers such as Converge International, Assure Programs, and AccessEAP, among others. Many large employers, government agencies, and universities have EAP contracts in place. If you are unsure whether your workplace has an EAP, your HR team or manager can usually advise. EAPs complement, rather than replace, individual mental health treatment accessed through Medicare or private health insurance.
