How to Talk to Your GP About Mental Health (With a Word-for-Word Script)

The GP acts as the gatekeeper to the Australian mental health system. Many people feel anxious about "not knowing what to say" in those 20 minutes. You might fear that you won't sound "sick enough" or that you will forget your points. However, your GP manages these conversations every day. Here is a word-for-word script to help you secure your Mental Health Treatment Plan with minimal stress.

Step 1: Booking the Appointment

Do not book a standard 10-minute slot. Instead, tell the receptionist:

"I would like to book a long appointment to discuss a Mental Health Treatment Plan."

This ensures your doctor has enough time to complete the necessary paperwork without rushing you.

Step 2: Starting the Conversation (The Script)

When the doctor asks why you are there, use this opening line:

"I have been struggling with my mental health lately. Specifically, I would like to create a Mental Health Treatment Plan so I can see a psychologist."

Step 3: Describing Your Symptoms

You do not need to be a medical expert. Simply describe your experience using these phrases:

  • "My anxiety feels physical — my heart races and I can't focus."
  • "I feel overwhelmed by [work/family/stress] and it is affecting my sleep."
  • "I have noticed that I am withdrawing from friends and feeling low most days."

Frequently asked questions:

Does my GP have to agree with me? GPs are there to support you. If you describe distress that affects your life, they will almost always grant the referral.

Can I choose my own psychologist? Yes. Tell your GP the name of the professional you found so they can address the letter to them.

What is a K10 form? It is a simple 10-question survey. Your GP uses it to measure your distress level for Medicare records.

Will my GP tell my employer? No. Medical confidentiality laws protect your discussion from your workplace.

How much does the GP visit cost? Many GPs bulk-bill the Mental Health Plan appointment. Check with your clinic about their specific billing policy before you go.
