About Sexual Health & Function support

Sexual health concerns can include difficulties with desire, arousal, orgasm, or pain during sex, as well as concerns about sexually transmissible infections (STIs), sexual identity, compulsive sexual behaviour, or recovering from sexual trauma. These concerns are common and often carry significant shame, making them difficult to raise with a GP or partner. Addressing sexual health concerns is an important part of overall wellbeing, not a luxury. A combination of psychological and medical input is often most effective. GPs, gynaecologists, urologists, and pelvic floor physiotherapists address physical dimensions of sexual health concerns. Psychologists, counsellors, and sex therapists address the psychological and relational dimensions. Trauma-informed approaches are important when sexual difficulties are connected to past experiences of assault or boundary violations. In Australia, sexual health clinics in each state provide free or affordable assessment and treatment for STIs and sexual health concerns without judgement. The Society of Australian Sexologists and ANZASERT maintain directories of qualified sex therapists. Medicare subsidises GP consultations and psychology sessions through a Mental Health Treatment Plan for related psychological concerns.
