Find a Social & Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) specialistAbout Social & Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) support
Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) is the holistic framework used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and health services to describe the foundations of good health and a good life. It encompasses connection to body, mind, family, community, Country, culture, and spirituality, recognising that wellbeing cannot be understood or addressed through a narrow clinical lens. Difficulties in any of these domains affect the whole person, and strengths in these areas protect against adversity. SEWB services are community-controlled and embed cultural knowledge into their practice. They may include yarning with an Elder, connection to Country activities, cultural healing programs, community development, as well as counselling, case coordination, and advocacy. SEWB is not simply a culturally adapted version of Western mental health care; it reflects a distinct and sophisticated understanding of human flourishing. In Australia, the SEWB workforce is described in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan and is supported through Primary Health Networks and ACCHOs. The Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Declaration outlines principles for SEWB services. Funding for SEWB support can be accessed through Medicare, NDIS, and targeted government programs. Connection to an ACCHO or Aboriginal Medical Service is the recommended starting point.
