About Schizophrenia & Psychosis support

Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders involve significant disruptions to thought, perception, and behaviour. These may include hallucinations (hearing, seeing, or sensing things others do not), delusions (strongly held beliefs inconsistent with reality), disorganised thinking, and what are called negative symptoms including reduced motivation, emotional flatness, and social withdrawal. These conditions can be frightening for the person experiencing them and for their family, and they require coordinated, ongoing support. Treatment is most effective when it combines medication management with psychological and social support. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp) helps people make sense of their experiences, develop coping strategies, and reduce the distress associated with symptoms. Family therapy and psychoeducation are also important components of care. Recovery is possible, and many people with schizophrenia live meaningful, connected lives with appropriate support. In Australia, community mental health teams in each state provide ongoing case management and clinical support for people with psychotic disorders. The NDIS provides funding for supports that enable social participation and daily living. Carers and families can access support through ARAFMI and SANE Australia. GPs coordinate ongoing care, and mental health care plans support access to subsidised allied health services.
