About Perinatal Mental Health & Postnatal Depression support

Perinatal mental health conditions affect up to one in five women during pregnancy and the first year following birth. Postnatal depression is the most widely known, but antenatal depression, anxiety, OCD, and birth-related PTSD are also common and often under-recognised. Symptoms can look different to typical depression and may include irritability, intrusive thoughts, difficulty bonding with the baby, or intense guilt, as well as more classic low mood and tearfulness. Effective treatment is available and recovery is possible. Psychological therapies including CBT and Interpersonal Therapy are well-researched for perinatal presentations. Where medication is indicated, a GP or perinatal psychiatrist can advise on options that are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Support for the partner and family is also important. In Australia, PANDA (1300 726 306) provides specialist perinatal mental health support and a national counselling service. Gidget Foundation Australia provides telehealth psychological support for eligible individuals. Midwives, maternal and child health nurses, and GPs all have a role in identifying and referring women for support. Medicare's Better Access initiative and some Gidget Foundation programs provide subsidised sessions.
