About Men's Anger & Aggression support

Anger is a normal human emotion, but when it is expressed through aggression, intimidation, or violence, it harms both the person experiencing it and those around them. For many men, anger is one of the few emotions they have been socialised to express, and it can serve as a cover for underlying hurt, fear, shame, or loss. Seeking support to understand and change patterns of anger is an act of courage and responsibility, not weakness. Psychological support for men working on anger addresses both the emotion itself and the underlying contributors, including past experiences, relationship patterns, self-worth, and stress. Cognitive and behavioural approaches help men identify triggers, interrupt automatic responses, and develop more effective ways of communicating needs and managing frustration. Emotion-focused work helps men access and express the feelings beneath the anger. In Australia, the STOP program and other men's behaviour change programs are available through community services and are sometimes required by courts or parenting orders. These are distinct from but can be complementary to individual therapy. The Men's Referral Service (1300 766 491) provides confidential support for men concerned about their own behaviour. GPs can refer to psychologists for individual work through Medicare's Better Access initiative.
