Find a Gender Identity specialistAbout Gender Identity support
Gender identity refers to a person's deeply held sense of their own gender, which may or may not align with the sex they were assigned at birth. For some people, exploring gender identity is a central and sometimes complex part of understanding themselves. This can bring up a range of emotions, from relief and clarity to uncertainty, grief, and difficulty navigating relationships, family, and social contexts. Therapy is not about deciding someone's gender for them, but about supporting the exploration with openness and care. Affirming psychological support is important and available. Practitioners who work with gender identity questions take a gender-affirming approach, meaning they support the individual's own understanding and process without trying to steer them toward any particular outcome. Therapy may address related concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or navigating coming out. In Australia, ACON, TransHub, and QLife offer information, referral, and peer support for people exploring gender identity. GPs with expertise in gender-affirming care can provide referrals to endocrinologists and other specialists if needed. Medicare does not currently fund gender-affirming surgery, but subsidised mental health sessions are available through a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan for related wellbeing concerns.
