About Gaming Disorder support

Gaming disorder, recognised by the World Health Organization, involves a pattern of gaming behaviour that takes priority over other interests and daily activities, continues or escalates despite negative consequences, and impairs personal, family, social, or occupational functioning. It is important to distinguish gaming disorder from intensive gaming that does not cause harm; most people who game heavily do not have a disorder. When gaming does become problematic, it often serves as an escape from anxiety, depression, loneliness, or other difficulties. Psychological treatment for gaming disorder typically involves understanding what needs gaming is meeting, addressing underlying mental health concerns, and developing alternative sources of meaning, achievement, and connection. Motivational interviewing and CBT are commonly used. Family involvement is often important, particularly for young people whose gaming is concerning parents. In Australia, specialist support for gaming disorder is still developing, but practitioners with experience in behavioural addictions can provide effective help. The National Gambling Helpline (1800 858 858) can assist with referral for behavioural addiction concerns more broadly. GPs can refer to psychologists through Medicare's Better Access initiative. Headspace provides support for young people whose gaming is affecting their mental health.
