Find a Connection to Country & Culture specialistAbout Connection to Country & Culture support
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, connection to Country, culture, language, and community is not simply a cultural preference; it is foundational to identity, health, and wellbeing. Colonisation has caused profound disruption to these connections, and the ongoing impact of this disruption continues to affect social and emotional wellbeing across generations. Strengthening connection to Country and culture is itself a healing act and a protective factor for mental health. Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) services that are culturally grounded understand that healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people cannot be separated from culture, community, and Country. Healing activities may include cultural practices, time on Country, connection with Elders, language revitalisation, and community gatherings, alongside or instead of Western therapeutic approaches. A holistic view of wellbeing that encompasses spiritual, cultural, and relational dimensions is central. In Australia, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) provide culturally safe primary health care including SEWB support. The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) provides national advocacy. Healing Foundation programs support survivors of institutional care and their communities. SEWB workers embedded in community health services provide culturally grounded support.
