About Anorexia Nervosa support

Anorexia nervosa involves a persistent restriction of energy intake, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted or distressing relationship with body weight and shape. It has one of the highest mortality rates of any mental health condition. Despite its serious nature, anorexia is not about vanity or a desire to look a certain way; it is a complex mental illness often rooted in perfectionism, trauma, control, and a profound struggle with identity and emotion. People of all body sizes, genders, and backgrounds can experience anorexia. Treatment for anorexia requires a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach that addresses both the medical and psychological dimensions. Physical stabilisation and nutritional support are essential foundations before psychological therapy can be fully effective. Family-Based Treatment (FBT) is the leading approach for young people, while Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders (CBT-E), Maudsley Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA), and Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM) are used with adults. In Australia, the Butterfly Foundation operates a national helpline (1800 33 4673) and provides specialist eating disorder support. Eating disorders are now recognised under the Medicare Eating Disorder Plan, which provides up to 40 subsidised sessions per calendar year with eligible practitioners. Inpatient and intensive day programs are available in major cities for those who require a higher level of care.
